After experiencing a decrease in her commercial success with her fifth and six studio albums, Como Ama una Mujer and Brave (both 2007) and the unmarried "Louboutins" (2009), Lopez left Epic Records in February 2010, citing that she had fulfilled her contractual obligations and at present wished to release her seventh studio album, Love?, under a new label.[2] Her departure from the label temporarily halted production on the album, notwithstanding upon signing a new contract with Island Records, recording resumed on the album.[3] "On the Floor", her first single with the label, was released in February 2011. The song topped the charts across the globe, becoming one of the most successful singles of the yr.[4] Post-obit the release of "On the Floor", Love? produced two moderately successful singles: "I'm Into Y'all" and "Papi", both of which topped the US Billboard Hot Dance Social club Songs chart. Dearest? itself was a moderate commercial success and was viewed as a humble comeback from Lopez, as many had considered her recording career over.[5]

Writing and product [edit]

"Dance Over again" was written past RedOne, Enrique Iglesias, Bilal "The Chef", AJ Junior and Pitbull.[12] After hearing a demo version of the rails, she begged Iglesias to let her record the song, telling him that it was "her song".[13] [14] Lopez, who was going through a divorce with Marc Anthony and the "breakup of a family", felt equally if the song had come to her at the "perfect moment".[thirteen] [14] According to Lopez, the period was devastating because family is very important to her.[13] Lopez revealed: "I had to turn that into something better"; she idea: "I don't want to just survive information technology, I desire to come out better than that." Lopez didn't desire to be "the woman who stayed in bed for months".[13] "I knew I had to get through it. I'd trip the light fantastic every twenty-four hours, I'd work out, I'd say a little prayer and I nevertheless wouldn't feel any better. So I'd go to bed and go up the next twenty-four hour period and do information technology all again. It was a process, and it very gradually got a footling easier ... I had to exercise it for my kids. I had to get through it for them."[13] She re-wrote parts of the verses to ameliorate chronicle to her experiences.[14] The song "helped elevator her out of the darkness" and gave her hope again.[13] Looking dorsum on the song in December 2012, Lopez stated that: "'Trip the light fantastic toe Again' became my canticle ... an expression of what I needed to exercise at that fourth dimension in my life and for what I was taking on with [my career]. It was a beautiful metaphor that became my reality."[xiii]

Lopez'south vocals for "Dance Again" were arranged by RedOne and produced by Kuk Harrell. They were recorded at Pinky'south Palace. Pitbull'southward vocals were recorded by Al Burna at Al Burna Studios, Miami, Florida. I love the message of the song. That when something bad happens, your life is not over. You lot have to get upwardly. Y'all're gonna live. Y'all're gonna to exist okay. You're gonna dance again."[14]

Composition [edit]

"Trip the light fantastic Again" is an uptempo dance-popular and electropop song, with a length of three minutes and fifty-vii seconds (iii:57).[29] It was written by Nadir "RedOne" Khayat, The Chef, Enrique Iglesias, Achraff Janussi and Armando "Pitbull" Perez, who is also featured on the song.[xxx] During an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Lopez stated that the song was nearly complete when she heard it and that she only inverse minor details, but kept the bulletin of the song the same.[fourteen] The electro beat out begins, and the song kicks off with Pitbull'south brief rap introduction.[31] The beat of the song shifts from upbeat pings and claps to a bass backdrop as Lopez takes over the vocals.[31]

The first verse begins with Lopez singing, "Nobody knows what I'm feeling inside. I find it so stupid and so why should I hide that I love to make love to you baby."[31] The quick pace electro beat returns, revving up free energy before Lopez goes into the chorus, "I wanna dance and love and trip the light fantastic again." Pitbull sings the lyrics "Dance, aye, love, next", and even occupied a rap verse for the song. Sara Gates of The Huffington Post said that the chorus line "volition surely go stuck in your head."[31] It has been suggested that the chorus was "cheesy" and weak, and ends upward beingness trumped by the pre-chorus, verses, overall production and fist-pumping beat.[28] The song contains sexual innuendos, and Lopez sings the bridge with heartbreaking emotion.[32] The song has been compared to Lopez'southward song "Waiting for This evening".[33] Kyle Anderson from Entertainment Weekly noted that Pitbull'southward lyrics "Tin't even evidence honey 'cause they'll sue ya" was a reference to Lindsay Lohan suing him for using a reference to her without her consent in his song "Give Me Everything" (2011).[34] [35]

Critical response [edit]

Music critics have been divided on "Trip the light fantastic Again".[36] Kate Callahan from MTV.com pointed out the similarities between "Dance Again" and "On the Floor"—"The vocal is a fun trip the light fantastic pop track with a nifty beat, very much along the lines of their 2011 collaborative effort 'On The Floor'."[29] Callahan said that the formats of the two songs were very akin, but also added that as the title implies, the song is danceable, despite not beingness her well-nigh original song.[29] Katherine St Asaph of Popdust gave the song a mixed review, stating "[without sampling a song] ways "Dance Once again" doesn't have any of that swoon or attraction, let alone 1 unifying riff, and it means that correct before every verse-to-prechorus or prechorus-to-poetry transition, y'all're imagining the "la-lalalala..." chorus that doesn't suspension out. What breaks out instead is the stately dance-pop that makes up the remainder of "On the Flooring," more polite than pressing even when it's fifty-fifty clearer that the metaphor here is dancing-as-sex."[33] Robbie Daw of the website Idolator gave the vocal a positive review, writing that information technology was far more superior and much more euphoric dance-pop offer than "On the Floor". Daw added that "the American Idol gauge goes for more than of a cheery, almost Kylie Minogue-esque trip the light fantastic-pop vibe with "Dance Again". If we were gamblers, we'd put our money on this becoming another huge hit for J.Lo & Co."[37]

Glen Gamboa of Newsday gave the vocal a negative review, commenting that "She holds back for much of the song, with its blusterous chorus and moments where it seems ready to launch into a much broader anthem, but instead stays on a sleek, unpredictable line. Would it exist amend if it blossomed into "Waiting for Tonight" like information technology wants to? Maybe."[38] Kyle Anderson from Entertainment Weekly gave the song a positive review, writing "Lopez once again sings over a buttery disco groove with an assist from Miami'due south favorite bilingual MC." Anderson noted that the chorus of the vocal is "every bit pure a slice of effervescent pop as Lopez has ever been a part of, and while information technology probably isn't the sort of matter meant to be listened to on headphones in a cubicle, it should play pretty well in places where grinding is encouraged (like clubs in Ibiza, and eye school dances)."[35]

Melinda Newman of Hitfix was positive in her review, saying that the song "It lives up to its championship: You'll desire to put on your dancing shoes and dance once again. The song isn't equally interesting musically as the pair'south previous hitting collaboration, "On the Flooring" but it is more consistent in its commitment to existence a full-on dance twirler ... It's totally charming, especially the "woo..ooh" background singing."[39] Newman compared the chorus of the vocal to Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)" (2010).[39] Gina Serpe of E! News said "don't think for a minute that the meaning behind the song was lost on Lopez, who'due south been through some personal travails of her ain this past year," and briefly commented that the song was "Probable already destined to hit the top of the charts."[40] Similarly, Jessica Sinclair of Long Island Printing commented that the song was a "sure-to-exist-hit song."[41] Amy Sciarretto of Pop Beat out labelled "Trip the light fantastic Once more" as one of the best trip the light fantastic toe songs of 2012. She stated that: "The vocal has an infectious beat that'll get you moving and grooving."[42]

In the United States, "Trip the light fantastic toe Once again" experienced moderate nautical chart success; while an improvement on her previous singles from Beloved?, "I'm Into You" and "Papi", it failed to lucifer the success of "On the Floor".[43] For the calendar week ending Apr 2, 2012, information technology debuted on Billboard's Popular Songs chart at number 34, and ultimately peaked at 17.[44] [45] In its official get-go calendar week of availability, the song sold 118,000 digital copies following the release of its accompanying music video, launching at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, her tertiary highest debut on the nautical chart after "All I Have" which debuted at 25 in 2002 and "On the Floor" which debuted at nine in 2011.[46] [47] "Dance Again" also debuted at number 14 on Billboard 's Hot Digital Songs chart following its release.[44] In its second week, it brutal seven slots on the Hot 100 to number 34 with 85,000 digital copies sold.[48] The following calendar week information technology climbed to 29 with sales of 74,000 digital copies.[49] Its quaternary week saw sales of 76,000, assuasive it to reach a new acme of number 25.[50] Following her performance of the song on American Idol, it sold an boosted 104,000 digital copies which brought "Dance Again" to its summit position of number 17. On March three, 2012, Lopez revealed via social networking website Twitter that she would be shooting a new video for a song entitled "Trip the light fantastic toe Again", writing "R U Gear up ii #DanceAgain".[67] The clip was directed by Paul Hunter; a longtime collaborator of hers.[16] [17] He had previously worked with her on the music video for her debut single "If You Had My Beloved" (1999), as well every bit "Feelin' So Good" (2000) and "Papi" (2011).[68] The post-obit day on March 4, Lopez posted a sneak peek of the shoe she wore in the music video on her official website.[69] On March 31 and April 1, Lopez posted more than pictures from the video for "Trip the light fantastic toe Once again" on her official website.[70] [71]

A sneak peek of the video was shown on the Apr v, 2012 episode of American Idol, while the full video premiered after that day on Lopez's Vevo Channel.[72] Lopez'due south young man Casper Smart, also a choreography and dancer, appears in the video.[73] Lopez told Extra TV that it was very "natural" working with Smart, "It was simply a very natural affair for u.s. to do that together. Everything that the song is saying—where I'm at—it was just very natural. It didn't feel forced."[74] The video uses product placement for both Lopez's fragrance, Glowing[75] and Voli vodka,[76] for which Pitbull is a spokesperson.[77]

Synopsis [edit]

Lopez in a centre of the orgy scene

The music video for "Trip the light fantastic toe Again" opens on a blackness screen, with the words "Ever remember... You lot will live, you volition love, you will dance again" printed in white.[78] Lopez is then shown entering a "zero-gravity" room, where a stream of vodka is flowing in the air.[75] She looks up to an "orgy of scantily clad dancers", piled up on one another according to MTV's Jocelyn Vena.[76] [79] Lopez is airlifted from the basis, and joins the erotic orgy. The skirt she was wearing when she entered the room is ripped off, revealing a low-cut top. Smart then enters the room. Vena wrote, "In the bevy of people, Lopez crawls to her guy, he crawls to her, and from there they embark on a love affair, full of pop-and-lock trip the light fantastic moves and blindfolded shenanigans".[76]

RadarOnline commented, "In the video, Casper is actress friendly to J.Lo'due south derrière, caressing his lady honey's famous rear terminate as she shows off her fab figure in a black Basque and hellacious heels. Casper shows off his sturdy build, which is covered by tattoos."[79] The couple besides break into one of Lopez's signature dance breaks.

Scenes with Pitbull shown sitting down in front end of a door are shown.[75] Smart is later seen dancing with Lopez while they are both covered in glitter.[80] Towards the cease of the clip, Lopez is seen dancing in between two stripper polls in a blackness studded crop top. She is joined over again by Smart, who she blinds with a blindfold that reads "love is bullheaded", and they later swap roles (these scenes reflected the photo stills posted to Lopez's website days earlier).[80] [81] The video closes with a shot of Lopez's fragrance, Glowing.[76]

Response [edit]

Sarah Maloy of Billboard magazine noted the amount of sexual content in the music video, writing that it every bit "body glitter, random choreographed trip the light fantastic toe numbers, poles and sex—lots of sexual practice. Oh and Pitbull's there likewise, hanging out on the sidelines while J.Lo gets dirty, dabbling in orgies and bondage".[80] Amusement Weekly 's Marc Snetiker observed that although the song was "relatively harmless and catchy, the video is...confusing", simply thought information technology was worth watching.[75] Jenna Hally, writing for MTV Buzzworthy, praised Lopez in the music video, writing "holy moly, how can this woman have birthed two humans and still look this amazing?", however felt that it was inappropriate for its American Idol debut, calculation "we thought "Idol" was a family show? This video is less 'sit down on the burrow and chill with dad' and more than 'call your boyfriend over immediately.'"[82] Access Hollywood institute similarities between the scene in which Lopez "can be seen grinding on the floor, surrounded by a host of hot bodies" and Australian recording artist Kylie Minogue's music video for "All the Lovers" (2010).[83] AZ Cardinal'due south Ed Masley heavily criticized the clip for airing on American Idol, and wrote:

"Steven Tyler swaggers past the family-friendly threshold most every week on American Idol. But Jennifer Lopez made Tyler appear a flake prim and retiring by comparison when Idol screened her video for "Dance Again," seductively slithering on hands and knees beyond the flooring to encounter a lover who's tugging at something in his trousers. I'm not saying there was annihilation explicit going on. And the version on VEVO goes much heavier on kink. Only Idol viewers did become scenes of J.Lo'south multi-platinum booty being handled with care by a shirtless male dancer ... She eventually blindfolds the shirtless male dancer, caressing his chest until most five-yr-olds could figure out what happens adjacent ... I enjoy a tawdry music video as much every bit anyone. My problem with the J.Lo clip is "Idol" still pretending it'southward a family friendly show while screening information technology—because you can't have everything both means, despite what Pitbull suggests for your girl in the version on VEVO".[84]

A representative from a Correct Wing Group, Dan Gainor, condemned the video, saying information technology was too steamy for "family unit-friendly American Idol" and went every bit far every bit saying her "skanky new video shows how desperate she is to retain her fame despite her fading relevance".[85] E! Online's Natalie Finn commented, "Pitbull gets to keep his suit on, merely Lopez, clad for the most role in a bodysuit and fishnets (and at times a solid coat of glitter) is bare for the grabbing. Her beau ladies in the video... may have even less on—which is perfect since there'due south a gravity-defying orgy taking place in the background equally Lopez and the well-muscled Smart make eyes at each other".[86]

Live performances [edit]

Lopez performed the vocal on the May ten results show of American Idol where she used to be a judge.[87] She was dressed in a skin-tight blue bodysuit and blackness stockings, surrounded by a dozen back-upwardly dancers.[88] On October half-dozen she performed at the German television prove Wetten, dass..?, which is the biggest show in Frg. The vocal is besides a closing number of her first ever world bout, Trip the light fantastic toe Again Earth Tour.[89] [90] Lopez performed the vocal equally part of her medley during the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on August xx, 2018, at Radio Metropolis Music Hall in New York Urban center.[91]

In popular culture [edit]

The vocal was covered on the American TV series Glee in the episode "The New Rachel". Sung by Kate Hudson, it was in a mashup with the Lady Gaga vocal "Americano".[92] In August 2013, a clip of 13-year-old boy Sam Horowitz performing during his Bar Mitzvah became a viral video online. In the video, which garnered significant media attention, Horowitz performs a choreographed dance routine to "Trip the light fantastic Again".[93] [94] [95]
